About TodayPicked

TodayPicked is a calendar of what’s on, made by people who go out in the same places you do. One location at a time, one day at a time. We started in Bali because that’s where we are.

For anyone looking for something to do

Most of what happens somewhere never makes it to one place. It sits in a venue’s stories, in a newsletter, on a poster by the door. We go and get it: we watch the venues, the newsletters and the pages that actually announce things, and we pull the events out of them every day.

Then a person looks at it. Every event starts as a concept, invisible on the site, until someone on our team approves it. That is true whether it came from a venue, from a visitor who tipped us, or from a source we watch. Nothing publishes itself. When something is wrong, the “Something off?” link on any event page reaches us directly, and you don’t have to leave a name.

We check the things that ruin an evening when they’re wrong: the date, the time, the place, and whether it’s still happening at all. What we haven’t checked, we say so. A page that admits it doesn’t know something is worth more than one that guesses confidently. If you want the long version, how we check spells out what we look at and what we don’t.

The part we want to be very clear about

Some venues pay us. None of them can buy our opinion.

Picked For You is our own editorial choice. It is free, we choose it ourselves, and it is not for sale. No amount of money gets an event into it, and paying us for anything else never earns one. Featured is the paid one, and where you see that word, that is exactly what it means.

We wrote that rule down before we had a single paying venue, so that we would not get to decide it later, with a bill in hand. What a venue can buy is a more prominent spot. What nobody can buy is our saying something is good.

For venues and organisers

Your listing is free. Every venue that has events on the calendar gets a page, with the basics and the events, and it stays free. You don’t have to do anything for it and you don’t have to pay for it.

In practice we do work for you whether or not you ever talk to us. We watch your programme, we update a price or a time when we notice it has changed, and we fold the same night back together when it reaches us twice under two names. None of that is perfect, and we’d rather say so than pretend. If we have something wrong, tell us and we’ll fix it the same way we fix our own mistakes.

Who we are

A small team. Small enough that a human being reads every event before it goes on the calendar, which is the whole point, and small enough that we’d rather cover one location properly than ten badly. When we open the next one, it’ll be because we can do it the same way.
